Warning Signs Your Dryer Vent Is Clogged in Dallas (and Why It's a Fire Risk)

A clogged dryer vent is one of the most overlooked fire risks in a Dallas home. Lint builds up slowly and out of sight, so most homeowners have no idea there is a problem until the dryer stops working well — or worse. Here are the warning signs to watch for, and why they matter.
1. Clothes Take More Than One Cycle to Dry
This is the number one sign. When lint blocks the vent, hot moist air cannot escape, so your clothes stay damp and you end up running the dryer two or three times. If a single load suddenly needs multiple cycles, the vent is likely clogged.
2. The Dryer and Laundry Room Get Very Hot
A blocked vent traps heat inside the dryer and the room around it. If the top of the dryer is hot to the touch or the laundry room feels like a sauna after a load, airflow is restricted.
3. A Burning Smell
Lint is highly flammable. If you smell something burning when the dryer runs, stop using it — that is trapped lint heating up against hot components, and it is the most urgent warning sign of all.
4. Lint Building Up Around the Dryer or Vent
Visible lint around the dryer door, behind the machine, or at the exterior vent hood means the system is overloaded and pushing lint back into the room. On a recent Dallas job, we opened a wall vent so packed the lint spilled onto the floor:
5. The Exterior Vent Flap Does Not Open
Your outside vent has a flap that should open when the dryer runs. If it stays shut or barely moves, air is not getting through — a clear sign of a blockage.
Why This Is a Fire Risk, Not Just an Annoyance
Clogged dryer vents cause thousands of house fires every year. Lint ignites easily, and a blocked vent lets it collect right next to the dryer’s heat source. The NFPA’s home fire safety resources list failure to clean dryer vents as a leading cause of dryer fires.
